The group accountable to get a big World of Warcraft legacy server has disbanded soon after alleging that a former team member embezzled a huge number of dollars in donated funds.
If somebody ever decides to create a book about the seemingly ceaseless saga of people attempting to create a sustainable World of Warcraft legacy server – an unofficial server where folks can play old versions with the game – I’d advise they call it Everquest, if that name wasn’t already taken. It just keeps going and going, in spite of shutdowns from Blizzard, leadership disagreements, and now, a scandal involving a large number of real dollars.
The Elysium Project, which earlier this year helped revive (then un-revive) a well-publicized WoW legacy server referred to as Nostalrius, has disbanded in the wake of alleged dirty dealings involving two core members of its team. One member named Sheena, former team members said in a statement posted yesterday, allegedly took over 2,000 (about $2,350) from a donations PayPal that was keeping the project afloat, applying it for “personal financial reasons.”
“[The] Elysium Project is becoming dissolved and relaunched out of the control of those who have abused the trust from the staff, community, and legacy movement as a complete,” study the statement. These members have elected to kind a brand new legacy project referred to as “Light’s Hope.” They apparently walked out the door with big amounts of Elysium’s back-up data, which means that former Elysium players must be capable of access their old characters in some form.
The statement also mentioned that the member that Sheena was complicit inside a gold-selling operation getting run by a different core member of your Elysium team, Crogge, which place additional strain on the server’s development and reputation.
“We understand that we’re abandoning lots of brand recognition from each Nostalrius and the Elysium Project by carrying out this,” they wrote. “However, we believe that the actions of two rogue staff members have irrevocably damaged the image with the rest of the employees and wanting to pick up the pieces is just not worth the hassle.”
Update 10/17/17 7:30 PM: The two men and women responsible for the alleged embezzlement and gold-selling, Sheena and Crogge, just published statements confirming that the allegations from their former teammates are precise. They added, even so, that their intentions have been pure. Pure-ish. In the event you squint.
“Yes, as a consequence of mine and my family’s private complications, I did receive some cash for a individual use, but at the end in the day it helped to devote extra time right here keeping the servers,” claimed Sheena, who allegedly skimmed thousands off the top of Elysium’s donations account, inside a statement posted to Elysium’s web-site.
“We did not choose to resort to [gold] sales, but donations were exceptionally limited, and it was either we do restricted sales or we shut down Elysium,” Crogge and Sheena wrote within a separate joint statement, also on the website. “That just isn’t an excuse, just the reality of your situation. This was not identified (neither was the economic struggles we were possessing) by most of the Elysium team. We do not imply to defend this position, only be extra upfront about it.”
Sheena also claimed that she’s performed plucking coins in the donation purse, which can be fantastic, mainly because I visualize that didn’t support the entire “not obtaining enough dollars to run servers without creating a secret underground gold market” situation.
Each Sheena and Crogge went on to say that they feel betrayed by the former Elysium members who took server data and employed it to found Light’s Hope. They added that they’ll endeavor to get Elysium up and operating once more regardless of working with what’s now a skeleton crew.
